Move over, Robin, here comes, Jamie.

June 27, 2010

When Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record in 1974, Ernie Harwell and Bill Slayback collaborated on “Move over Babe, Here Comes Henry,” a musical tribute.

Wonder if some tunesmith will do the same now that Jamie Moyer has “bested” Robin Roberts on the all-time home runs allowed list? Like the pundits say, you have to be a pretty decent pitcher to hang around long enough to give up 506 (“and counting”) home runs.

Anyway, there’s at least one line that will have to be done over in record books such as The SABR Baseball List & Record Book: Baseball’s Most Fascinating Records and Unusual Statistics. In a way, I almost feel sorry for Roberts, since he no longer stands atop the leaderboard. So te question is, is a holding a “bad record” worse than holding no record at all?
