For the Boys on Memorial Day

May 28, 2010

I ran this Q&A with Gary Bedingfield, author and host Baseball in Wartime, last November in honor of Veteran’s Day.

Thought I’d do post again to commemorate Memorial Day.

In addition, I received a sweet little video recently which also has some WW II content. Around the League, 1939-1946 was filmed and later narrated by George Case, Jr., all three-time All-Star outfielder with the Washington Senators (with one year on the Cleveland Indians). Case led the American League in stolen bases five consecutive years and six times overall, finishing with a career total of 349. After he retired as a player, he spent almost 40 years as a coach, minor league manager, scout and minor league batting instructor.

The 37-minute video, which was produced by George Case III who provided additional narration and prospective, is a nostalgic look at a time that was both simpler and more precarious. The players are at ease, mugging for the camera, generally enjoying themselves and providing enjoyment for others during an otherwise dark time in global.

For more information on the video, contact George Case III.
