* Lest we forget: Robin Roberts

May 6, 2010

The Hall of Fame pitcher passed away today at the age of 83.

Roberts was still in the majors when I was coming to the game. I can picture one his last baseball cards in my mind (and here on the page).

One of the things I always admired about him — especially in this contemporary age — was his ability to finish what he started. He led the NL in complete games for five consecutive years and ended his career with 305, out of 609 game starts. Many of his single season totals compare with league totals these days.

Here’s the NY Times obituary, written by Richard Goldstein.

Roberts was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976. He published his autobio in 2003.
