* With apologies to Rogers and Hammerstein…

March 25, 2010

Books about pitchers, and books about batters.
Titles on deep and historical matters.
Trips to Fall Classics that started in spring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Bios on Aaron and Mantle and Maris
(The new one on Willie will soon be a classic).
A new one on Reggie and all of his rings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Books with too much exposition
meant for casual fans;
I often just leave them, there’re others to read
Oh, look, one on “Stan the Man.”

Books on the game at the turn of the cent’ry
(That is, the 19th, not subjects more recently).
Marking occasions and anniversaries:
These are a few of my favorite things.

Books that look back on the days I was youthful
don’t even have to be right or be truthful.
They bring back mem’ries with elan and zing,
so they’re a few of my favorite things.

Even novels, that are cliched
— they just drive me mad —
I simply remember they all ’bout “the game”
and then I don’t feel so bad.
