* Asterisk th*s

January 24, 2010

There’s been a lot of talk about what to do with the statistics from the Steroids Era. Some want them expunged from the record books. Others, like Tony Kornheiser, want a special note on any Hall of Fame plaque, bringing into account the possibility (probability?) that said honored player partook of PED.

My take is: since baseball is generally a zero sum game, how can you changed the batters numbers without adjusting the picthers’? If a home run by Barry Bonds wins the game, does that win for his team come of the boards? Does the opposing losing pitcher get credit? “Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera,” as the King of Siam would say.)

David Ezra took up the subject as part of his book, Asterisk: Home Runs, Steroids, and the Rush to Judgment.

Rob Biertempfel, the Pirates’ beat writer for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review doesn’t think that’s going to happen, as expressed in this piece.
