* Back to work / Bits and pieces

September 30, 2009

The holidays are over now so let’s get back to business.

  • More on Posnanski and his new book, The Machine, from the Wall Street Journal; Hartford Courant; Rob Neyer and ESPN (interview); Cincinnati.com (“Latest book may be the best on Reds’ dynasty”); Baseball Prospectus Radio had this interview with the author with the author (audio link), available on iTunes.
  • Brett Friedlander, co-author of Chasing Moonlight: The True Story of Doc “Moonlight” Graham, was the subject of this article from the Wilmington (NC) Star News website and this interview on WHQR radio (audio link). Finally, Mediabistro.com ran this “What do you do?” column, featuring Posnanski.
  • From the Washington (DC) Examiner, this piece on Warren Corbett’s biography, The Wizard of Waxahachie: Paul Richards and the End of Baseball as We Knew It. Upshot: “Corbett’s book is a compelling look at a man whose big league teams never won a world championship, but whose influence is still on display today.”
  • From the New Canaan (CT) Advertiser, this brief item about local author Robert L. Mills and his (self-published) book, Baseball — Then and Now. Working at a community paper myself, I can tell you how this works: a local resident — sometimes a subscriber to the community paper — writes a book, produces a music CD, or holds an art exhibition and sends in a press release to the publication. Generally, there’s no story involved, just a printing of the notice. A nice deed by the apper to highlight one of their own without actually doing a review of the project.
