Uh-oh, Joe.

Minnesota catcher Mauer is the cover story. You know what that means. Just ask Zack Gerinke, who appeared on the May 5 issue. Prior to the stiry, he was 6-0 with a 0.40 ERA. For four games, beginning with his May 31 start, he gave up 15 earned runs in 26 innings and took two of his three losses. Mauer, at this moment, is batting .395 with 14 home runs and 43 RBI in just 49 games since coming back from an injury.

Other baseball items:

  • Poll: Which manager would you like to play for?
  • More on Mauer’s attempt to hit .400
  • The emotional story Mallory Holtman (mostly) and Liz Wallace, two college softballers who helped opponent Sara Tucholsky round the bases for her final at bat and only home run of her entire “career” when Sara injured herself rounding first base. Not only the story of the athletes and Mallory’s gesture, but the impact it had around the country. Compare that with Rick Reilly’s story in ESPN the Magazine about a coach who insisted an umpire call a batter who had hit a home ru out because her teammates high fived her “illegally” while she ws running the bases.
