Catching up with baseball fan Peter Sagal

June 16, 2009

I was catching up on my Tweets and found an entry by our old friend Peter Sagal referring to an interview he gave to the NY Daily News‘ “Touching Base” blog. It was  quite an in-depth conversation, he notes, “In which I wax on, at great length, about baseball.”

While reading through it my spider sense touched on an answer he gave to the question, “Who is one baseball person you’d like to have as a guest on the ‘Not My Job’ segment (of Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!…?”

Sagal notes the baseball guests he has already hosted, including former Yankees’ stalwart Moose Skowron:

…he was third and last of the three I’m thinking of. He was great, although it turns out that one of the stories he told, and we broadcast with great pleasure, wasn’t true. At least, there’s no evidence that it was true. The story that he told was how he got beaned in the head, and in his vengeance, when he got to first base, he took out the shortstop, broke his leg at second base and started his famous coaching career. Well, somebody checked, and found out that never happened. (emphasis added) Oh well.

At the risk of appearing immodest, care to guess who that someone was?

From Sagal’s blog sometime this January

A friend fact-checks Moose Skowron’s reminiscences, as recently heard on our end of the year “Not My Job in Review show.” The results are not pretty, but it’s hard to blame Moose. I prefer to live in a world in which Moose actually broke Gene Mauch’s leg, although I don’t know if Gene Mauch would.

The link from Sagal’s entry takes the reader to Kaplan’s Korner, my blog on Jews and Sports for the NJ Jewish News (it is mirrored on this site). To date that entry remains the most-viewed item in the Korner’s brief history.
