* Baseball (and television's) Golden Age

June 13, 2009

Reading Barra’s Berra bio and came across mention of Yogi and several teammates appearing on an episode of Sgt. Bilko, starring Phil Silvers.

Here’s a synposis from IMDB.com

Bilko’s Company B gets beaten at Baseball by the WACs and with a big game against Ritzik and Grover coming up he is in dire need of some help. Step forwards Private Harry Lumpkin, recent draftee. Lumpkin is from the south and regularly hunts squirrels armed only with rocks. Bilko sees his chance not to just beat Company A but to make his fortune by selling Lumpkin’s contract to the New York Yankees. The only thing that stands in his way is Lumpkin’s sweetheart Lulabells and Lumpkin’s patriotism to the Confederate flag..! Written by Stephen Farnsworth

I was unable to emed the clips, but here’s a link to the YouTube presentation.

It is interesting that you consider the 1950s as the Golden Age pf baseball and television. How do you define Golden Age of Baseball? I have many opinions.
