Memories & Memorabilia from the House that Ruth Built, by T.S. O’Connell (Krause Publications)
Leave it to other books to dwell on records and anecdotes, Legendary Yankee Stadium is, in fact, a collectors, dream, assembling scores of collectibles depicting some of the most beloved players in the long, storied history of the franchise.
O’Connell, the editor of Sports Collectors Digest, puts together a montage of photos, cards, and other items that recall the great players such as Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Berra, and — more recently — Munson, Jackson, Mattingly, and Jeter, to name a few. There are samples of art work, baseball cards, and other items that will no doubt jog the readers’ memories. It must have been a difficult choice for O’Connell, deciding which of the thousands of pieces to include for maximum emotional impact. It would have been nice to have a bigger publication — the book is less than 200 pages — but I guess the economics of the time dictated its length.
To be strictly accurate, this book isn’t really about Yankee Stadium (only a single chapter is actually devoted to the arena) and to name it so seems a blatant attempt to capitalize on that nostalgia craze for the defunct ballfield. But once you overlook that contrivance, this is a nicely done book that will be sure to thrill any Yankees fan.
