* Another reason to join SABR: Free books

May 21, 2009

From the SABR List-serve:

Marc Okkonen’s terrific pictorial book, 2000 Cups of Coffee, is now available for download on the members-only portion of the SABR website. You can find a link to it as soon as you log onto the members’ page.

This book contains images of approximately 2,000 major leaguers of the 1900-1949 era. These are ballplayers whose big league careers for lasted 10 games or fewer. Marc also includes listing of their minor league teams and where relevant, their college affiliations. This took an enormous amount of research on Marc’s part to accumulate these images of these obscure players, and we should be grateful for his sharing them with us.

I’ve been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research for about 25 years. Quite frankly, it’s taken a bad rap for a long time. It is not, contrary to popular belief, a collection of geeks and stat-heads (a baseball version of Trekkies?), but a group — about 7,000 by recent count — of people who love the game and its rich history. There are a number of publications produced by engaging writers on myriad topics that come free with membership.

Marc Okkonen has written several baseball titles, including perhaps the definitive source on uniforms (although it could stand an update).

Readers of The Bookshelf would probably spend the basic SABR membership fee on a few books anyway, so why not browse the website and see if joining wouldn’t kill two birds with one stone (apologies to Randy Johnson and dave Winfield for bringing up an unpleasant memories).
