* Announcement: The Emerald Guide to Baseball 2009

March 12, 2009

No, it’s not a history of the Irish and the national pastime (although we are getting close to St. Patrick’s Day…)

One of the benefits of being a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) are the wonderful publications that arrive in the mail each year. Scholars, historians, math professors, and just plain Joes (I count myself a member of the last) contribute thoughtful articles on myriad topics.

This year, however, they’ve gone above and beyond with The Emerald Guide to Baseball 2009. This massive undertaking — almost 600 pages — is available as a free PDF file not just to members, but to to the general public. At first I thought it was a bit silly; who is going to sit down to read such a tome on their computer? But it makes a lot sense: you don’t need to print out the whole thing (or anything at all). You can focus just on those items that interest you. Want to read about the Arizona League? Skip to page 533. First-Year Player Drafts for each team? It’s there. And to many more items to mention. (If you really want a more traditional rendering, it’s available for less than $25 from lulu.com.)

The EG is brought to you by Gary Gillette, Peter Palmer, and Rod Nelson. Gillette and Palmer were at the helm of the wonderful (and sorely missed) editions of Total Baseball.

Any, check it out, the Emerald Guide is a wonderful resource and you can’t beat the price.
