* W2W4: A look ahead

January 1, 2009

Stealing an idea from ESPN the Magazine (and others, no doubt). Took my math-challenged mind awhile to figure out that W2W4 means “what to watch for.” Duh.

Anyway, the always-informative BizofBaseball.com offers this list of ten stories to watch for in 2009, including:

  • The economy
  • Credit
  • Digital media rights
  • Cubs sale
  • New stadia
  • Ticket discounting/price integrity
  • Stub Hub, Red Sox, and MLB
  • Franchise sales
  • Player development costs
  • TV

You will note that none of these have to do with the game as played on the field, but behind the scenes.

My question is: with all the problems faced by the print industry, including book publishers, what will all this mean for baseball book production? I’m not an industry expert, but it would seem that fewer dollars mean less people working in the book world, means fewer books produced. Will this open the door to a wider “acceptance” of self-published titles?

Staye tuned.
