* Maddux calls it quits

December 6, 2008

Greg Maddux, perhaps this generation’s greatest pitcher, announced that he will officially retire at the upcoming winter meetings.

We’ve heard an awful lot about Roger Clemens, recently for all the wrong reasons. I’m willing to bet that Maddux is no choir boy, but he went about his work without the bluster and bravado of a Clemens with pretty much the same results. I won’t go into superlatives here. Suffice it to say, the way the game has changed in the last 2o years we many never see his like again. He was continued a master of his craft, always learning and trying to do better.

But as much of a profesional as he was, Maddux wasn’t above poking a little fun at himself:

Of course, the Mets had Maddux for awhile. Unfortunately, it was Mike, not Greg.
