* Happy birthday, Bobby Feller

November 4, 2008

Rapid Robert turned 90 on Nov. 3.

Feller was one of those players from “the greatest generation” — including Ted Williams, Warren Spahn, Bob Buhl, Hank Greenberg, Joe DiMaggio and many others — who lost precious years to the service of their country. Yes, some, like Feller and Williams, were on the front lines while others were relatively safe, and some went willingly and other reluctantly. But all answered their country’s call. At this risk of sounding some 20 or 30 years older than I am, I think it’s a shame that many of today’s young people take all this for granted and have no compunction to give back even a little bit.

Okay, I’m done.
