* The oldest living Hall-of-Famer tells all, again

September 22, 2008

A profile from the Palm Beach Post of Lee McPhail, the 91-year-old ex-baseball executive, and author of My Nine Innings: An Autobiography of 50 Years in Baseball.

My favorite line:

…MacPhail, who’s going on his third decade in Delray Beach and gave up golf just a year ago, has so many memories from a half-century in baseball that he often turns to his autobiography… for a quick refresher.

I was stationed at Camp (now Fort) Carson in 1953 prior to going to Korea. My memory tells me that Lee McPhail was
with the Colorado Springs Sky Socks baseball team during
that period as the GM or other job. Am I dreaming?

According to the Baseball-Reference.com Bull Pen wiki, “After graduating from Swarthmore College, MacPhail was the business manager of the Reading Brooks in 1941. He was the General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, then began a long association with the Yankees. He was the business manager then GM of the Kansas City Blues, then midwest farm director for the Yankees. He was Co-farm director, then director of player personnel for the team.”

No mention of Colorado Springs, but these wikis aren’t always 100% accurate. Does anyone know any differently?
