The Hall of Famer, both as a ballplayer and humanitarian, would have been an unbelievable 74 today.
As is the case for many such inspirational icons, the books are split between books for adults and and juveniles. Clemente is important on many levels: as an elite athlete, as a role model for kids, and as a symbol of pride for the Hispanic community. Much like Jackie Robinson, Clemente was the target of racism. Some might consider his burden was somewhat greater because of the language barrier. It was not uncommon for sportswriters to convey his quotes in the vernacular, such as “I get the beeg heet.”
