* Lest we forget: Bernie Mac

August 9, 2008

I was stunned when I read the news that the comedian/actor — he was the star of Mr. 3000 — had died at the age of 50. At the risk of sounding maudlin, the older I get, the more aware I am of those dying around me, especially when they’re younger than I. There are no guarantees of a long life (let alone a long and healthy life). Look at Randy (“The Last Lecture”) Pausch, dead at 47. And he had plenty of “lead time.” He learned his prognosis months ago and lived longer than expected. And while Art Buchwald was no spring chicken when he passed, he, also, was expected to have been gone more than a year before his expiration. I often ponder if it’s better to know ahead of time so you can plan and “adjust” to the news, or go suddenly and quickly? Anyway, I don’t want to turn this into too much of a philosophical discussion…

Mac was a versatile performer. I espcially enjoyed the eponymous Bernie Mac Show, as well as his bug-eyed turns in the Ocean‘s franchise.
