* "The Best," once again

July 23, 2008

I was planning to do my own analysis of Derek Gentiles recent title, Baseball’s Best 1,000: Rankings of the Skills, the Achievements, and the Performance of the Greatest Players of All Time. One thousand? seems like a mighty task Mr. Gentile has undertaken.

Would you mind being the last on that list? After all, there have been several thousand who have played on major league rosters, if only for a single game (a few never even got into a game).

Anyway, Thomas Stone who hosts the Philosopher Stone blog, has beaten me to the punhc, for which I say, “Thanks!”. You can read his comments here.

Like any book of this nature, readers will argue. Should Ted Williams be number 10 on the list? Number 11, etc. How do you differentiate between player number 745 and 746? These are the guys I’m more interested in, the Rich Dauers and Bobby Griches. Anyway, pick up Gentile’s book if you have a chance. It’s one of those that are enjoyable in that you don;t need to concentrate too much or finish it in one shot.
