* Lest we forget: Dell Bethel

July 23, 2008 · 2 comments

from the Cleveland Plain Dealer on July 20:

Dell Bethel… taught actors Robert DeNiro and Michael Moriarty how to play baseball like Major Leaguers for the movie Bang the Drum Slowly.

Bethel, who died June 26 at age 78, also landed a credited role as a third-base coach for the 1973 film while he coached baseball at City College of New York.

He also wrote instructional books about baseball, including Inside Baseball, The Complete Book of Baseball Instruction, and Coaching Winning Baseball.

Dell Bethel also ran a baseball camp which I attended in Pawling New York, in 1974.
The camp was called Ted Williams baseball camp, though I dont think he had anything to do with the camp except lending his name.
One of the features of the camp was a several hour lecture , the first day, about hitting.
I believed he was coaching at that time period a new york city college baseball team, and some of the players from that team were counselors in the camp.
