* "Getcha score cards here!"

July 23, 2008

The Los Angeles Times published this fascinating piece on a lost art/tradition.

In 1993, I was working on a manuscript about the Mets season. There were high expectations since the team had pulled out the stops to acquire some big names like Bobby Bonilla, Bret Saberhagen, and Eddie Murray, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment (and the subject of The Worst Team Money Could Buy, by Bob Klapisch and John Harper.

I kept meticulous scorecards for every game on a special, highly-detailed sheet. The only game I missed was the night my daughter was born. We were stating at a friend’s apartment in Manhattan, near the hospital, and I set the VCR to the wrong station. Imagine the horror to see that instead of the game, a tennis match (and not a good one at that). Fortunately, my wife was able explain my situation to WFAN and convinced them to send me an audio tape of the radio broadcast, thereby allowing me to at least keep the scoring “streak” intact.

Never did get that book published. Oh, well.
