* Books, the gifts that keeps on giving

June 29, 2008

From an Associated Press Report in the June 27 NY Daily News:

The graduating class of a suburban middle school got an unexpected surprise tucked inside their diplomas – signed baseball cards from Joba Chamberlain.

The cards were a thank you from the Yankees pitcher for the charity work the eight graders at Pleasantville Middle School performed all year.

The Westchester County students didn’t even know Chamberlain knew about their project, collecting and donating books to the Winnebago Indian reservation in Nebraska. Joba is a member of the 2,600-member tribe.

The school’s principal read a letter from Chamberlain at Thursday night’s ceremony, but didn’t reveal it was from him until the very end.
