* Happy birthday, Billy Werber

June 20, 2008

who turns 100 today.

For someone who played in the 1930s, Werber had some decent pop in his bat. He broke in with the 1930 NY Yankees, as a teammate of Babe Ruth. The best of his 11 seasons came in 1934, when he had career highs in runs scored (129), hits (200), doubles (41), triples (11), stolen bases (40), and a .321 batting average. He had five seasons with 10 or more home runs.

Werber wrote Memories of a Ballplayer: Bill Werber and Baseball in the 1930s in 2000.

With all due respect, this reminds me of a joke:

TV interviewer to man celebrating 100th birthday: To what do you owe your long life?

Birthday boy: To the fact that I haven’t died yet.
