* Review: The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball

June 2, 2008

BaseballGB, a blog from “across the pond,” reviews this 2007 title by Tom Tango, et al. It reports on the nuts and bolts of the book, but doesn’t give an opinion as to its worth one way or the other.

I always find it interest to see how countries in which baseball is not a “natural sport,” handles coverage. For instance, when the Israel Baseball League played in 2007, it seems to have gotten more attention in the U.S. than in the Holy Land. Local media didn’t give it much attention, perhaps contributing to its demise, at least for 2008. Granted the league had more problems than just a poor marketing department, but it didn’t help to have broadcasters at games who obviously didn’t now diddly about the game.

Dear Ron,

Thanks for picking up on my review. For what it’s worth, “The Book” is very valuable in covering so many strategic decisions with such thoughtful analysis – it’s certainly the best I’ve seen in a single publication. Furthermore, it’s a very enjoyable read.

If you are a manager and want to use it to win a whole lot of extra games, though, you might be disappointed. As the authors point out, using the optimum strategy in many of the examples covered might only get you a handful of extra runs across a 162-game season.

Kind regards,

Joe
