* Happy birthday, Hal Newhouser

May 20, 2008

The surprising member of the Hall of Fame was born this date in 1921.

I say surprising because his numbers seem less than impressive, compared with his contemporaries. He had “only” four seasons in which he won more than 20 games and his career total of 207 victories in 17 seasons (some were parts of seasons) are 32 fewer than David Wells. Newhouser had just two seasons in which he fanned more than 200 batters, and his K to BB rate was just 1.44. It must also be taken into consideration that he pitched during the War years, when competition was depressed.
