* Speaking of deconstruction: Lost and baseball

May 2, 2008

Two of my favorite things are baseball and Lost. Last night’s episode puts the two together: Jack’s annoyance that the Yankees had swept his beloved Red Sox in a series:

This was part of the latest column on the show on the Entertainment Weekly Web site, and is sort of apropos to my review of Rob Neyer’s latest book:

On the timing of Jack’s flash-forward The headline of Jack’s newspaper read, ”Yankees bludgeon Red Sox in series sweep.” The Yankees swept a series with the Red Sox late in the 2006 season (a historic five-game wipeout) and the 2007 season (a traditional three-game set). If you pause the picture (on a high-def DVR), you can make out the score 5-0, which is how the 2007 series ended. So I’m going to call it: Jack’s flash-forward took place in late summer of 2007.

Previous episodes made mention that the Sox had won the World Series in 2004. And here.

What I especially love about this clip is how the uber-serious Benjamin instantaneously transforms into a real Sox fan, explaining to a disbelieving Jack the circumstances by which the team won.
