* NPR Update: Gary Carter on The Leonard Lopate Show

May 1, 2008

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter on making the talk-show circuit, chatting up his new book, Still a Kid at Heart: My Life in Baseball and Beyond (Triumph). Yesterday, it was WNYC’s Leonard Lopate Show.

A few observations:

  • Not to be cynical or curmudgeonly — Carter strikes me as genuinely nice — but listen to this and decide if he’s read too many Dale Carnegie books. One of the main points in How to Make Friends and Influence People is to frequently say the name of the person with whom you are speaking (“That’s a great question, Leonard.”) Carter, always portrayed as a very friendly fellow, does this way more than is often heard on the program.
  • Knowing Carter is a Christian, I was surprised how long it took him to invoke the Lord’s name (using “God,” not “Jesus”).
  • Having heard and conducted several author interviews, maybe I’m just overly sensitive, but the answers seem quite rote. Reporters and hosts are often given a list of possible questions. Maybe Carter has answered the same queries so many times, it just comes off as rehearsed.
  • Like the projected book by Darryl Strawberry, Carter has published a previous autobio/memoir: A Dream Season, with John Hough, Jr. and released in 1987. Granted, Carter retired several seasons later and presumably had more material about which to write, but one of these days we’ll see a title for “second editions” of these books, titled I knew there was something I forgot to say…

I’m just sayin’.
