* This is what we spent tuition money for?

April 16, 2008

Eric Seidman, a senior at Penn State, has written Bridging the Statistical Gap, which “takes readers inside the sport’s box scores and stat sheets,” according to this article in the university’s Daily Collegian Online.

The book is expected to be released in May. Some topics include:

  • Great Batting Average Debate: What batting average does and does not tell us.
  • The Best Playoff Pitcher Is…: A “fairly simple system” to evaluate how well starting pitchers performed in the playoffs.
  • Mr. Meaningless: Do “clutch” hitters exist?
  • Tommy John Improvement: Discusses widespread belief that pitchers can improve following the surgery

Seidman, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, is a contributor for Statistically Speaking and MLBfrontoffice.com.
