* Review: The Southpaw

April 4, 2008

I’m going out on a limb here, because there’s no description, but I’m guessing the Fiftybooksproject blog is a school assignment, which means these are young people writing the reviews. That’s kind of refreshing. The choice of The Southpaw strikes me as a bit unusual. For one thing, it’s a serious book that I don’t think anyone would put in the “young adult” category. Second, it’s old and judging by my own teenage daughter, kids these days don’t usually want to have anything to do with “old.” (She won;t even watch a black and white movie.)

A few quotes from the review:

One positive thing I will say is that this is not one of those typical baseball stories where the writer glorifies the sport to the point where you’d think understanding it is like unlocking the code to the rosetta stone of American culture.

On the other hand,

This is the first of four books about Henry Wiggins. You can be sure I won’t bother reading the rest.

Kids.
