Remember Jane Jarvis?

March 23, 2008

In the days before pre-programmed music blasting from the rafters, major league ballparks employed people to play the organ to entertain the fans. Jane Jarvis played the Thomas organ for the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Mets.

To be honest, I thought she had passed on years ago. But she’s very much alive and well in NYC. Well maybe not so well at the moment, Jarvis, 92, was displaced from her residence due to a recent construction accident that resultd in several fatalities and caused much damage.

After she left the Mets, she worked for the Muzak company, but found her niche late in life as a Jazz performer.

Here’s wishing her a speedy return to the comforts of ehr own home.

Do you have any of Jane’s songs played on the Thomas Organ at Shea Stadium? I would love to purchase them.

Can someone tell me the song Jane would play when the Mets took the field?. It was not “Meet the Mets ,”but something else. I would love to know the name and how to get a copy of it.

I first started with the Mets in 1964 on a b/w television. Between innings I would hear this organ music. It was very good. JANE JARVIS! Her repetoire was very extensive and she would just pull up a tune and I would be dazzled. I didn’t know at the time it was a woman performing, but when the announcer mentioned the name… it stayed with me forever. To me no one could play like Ms. Jarvis. She could play ANYTHING! At the end of a game if the Mets lost, Jane Jarvis would play GOOD NIGHT SWEETHEART. It was sweet…

Good Night Sweetheart Jane Jarvis. That great jam-session in the sky welcomes you.

Tony, the song you’re thinking of was called “Let’s Go Mets” and it was composed by Jane herself. Somebody has to have it somewhere. I seem to remember them playing it on the sound system during the introduction of players for the 1969 reunion this year at Citi Field.
