The Entitled among the best? One man's opinion

March 20, 2008

From Rich Karlgaard’s “Digital Rules” column on Forbes.com, this brief recommendation for Frank Deford’s latest:

You’re Entitled

early each spring to read at least one good baseball book. Slide into Frank Deford’s novel, The Entitled, now out in paperback (Sourcebooks). This fine work ranks with Field of Dreams and The Natural.

His praise, indeed, but IMHO,way too overblown. It’s not even in my top 10, which includes Field, Natural, The Southpaw, The Celebrant, The Great American Novel, Man on Spikes, Brittle Innings, If I Never get Back, Snow in August,Murder at Ebbets Field, Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop.”

I rarely review fiction because I find likes and dislikes much more subjective than non-fiction.

Here’s a 2006 essay by John Thorn from The New York Times on the baseball novel.
