Happy Birthday, Home Run Baker

March 13, 2008

Almost didn’t get this one in today.

John Franklin Baker was born on this date in Trappe, Maryland in 1886. I only mention his birthplace because it was also where he died 77 years later. I wonder how many people live and die in the town in which they were born?

Baker spent his 13-year career with the Philadelphia Athletics and the New York Yankees (missing the 1915 and 1920 seasons), amassing 96 home runs, which was a pretty good feat in those days of the dead ball. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1955.

I was looking for family members of Nillie Pearl Syers. I have some reason to believe John Franklin (home run) Baker could be in her family…. Thanks for your information.
