Another roundup of "best books"

December 17, 2007

From Delaware Online, this list of five good reads to keep a fan warm during the off-season. The subjects range in “age” from the early 1900s to the mid 1990s, with, mercifully, no mention of cheating or steroids.

  • The Glory of Their Times, by Lawrence Ritter
  • John McGraw, by Charles C. Alexander
  • The Era, by Roger Kahn
  • The Pitch That Killed, by Mike Sowell
  • The Curse of Rocky Colavito, by Terry Pluto

Which of these is not like the other? Colavito seems to be much more “lightweight” in theme compared with the rest of the list. Glory is acknowledge as one of the classics in baseball lit, while Kahn and Alexander consistently produced nostalgic and memorable titles. Sowell presents the death of Ray Chapman in a moving contribution.
