Announcement: Zambrano book (and not a moment too soon)

October 11, 2007

Carlos Zambrano, the ace of the Chicago Cubs staff, has released his biography, published by Triumph Books.

A piece in the Oct. 11 Chicago Sun-Times by Lacy J. Banks, reported that:

Zambrano said his biography pretty much reflects the season he just finished.

”This season was full of ups and downs, and it ended too soon,” he said. ”Like all true Cub fans, I feel sad, too. I wanted us to go all the way and win a World Series this year. I didn’t expect Arizona to beat us and definitely not [sweep us].”

The Big Z: The Carlos Zambrano Story is also available in a Spanish-language version.

Here’s the thing: if the book has already been released and ran through the relatively normal production process (i.e., it wasn’t suddenly commissioned and rushed to print), Zambrano and co-author Pedro Miranda obviously didn’t write it last week. Wouldn’t the prudent thing to have waited until the Cubs were definitely done, one way or the other? I realize publishers want to strike while the iron is hot, but there have been too many “flavor of the month” biographies (Lenny Dykstra in 1987, Johnny Damon in 2005, etc.). On the other hand, it does represent the zeitgeist of the times.
