This Week (Oct. 8, 2007) in Sports Illustrated

October 9, 2007

“Playoff Phever” cries the cover of this week’s issue, which pheatures a photo of shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who boldly predicted at the beginning of the season, when the pundits were handing the Mets the Eastern Division Crown, that his team would be in the thick of the race. Of course, thick turned to thin against the Rockies, but they still did better than the Metsies. The feature story by Tom Verducci includes a sidebar for his post-season award winners in the print version.

A second feature — “What Love’s Got to Do With It,” by Gary Smith — profiles Joba Chamberlain, the Yankees’ rookie pitcher. Shortly after his call-up, the Yankees played the K.C. Royals and Chamberlain’s father was at the game, watching his son pitch in the majors for the first-time. A very emotional “made-for-motion-picture” moment

Other (brief) baseball items include:

  • Marc Ecko, the fashionista who bought Barry Bonds’ 756 homer and let the fans decide its fate
  • “Me and My Glove,” as described by the Indians’ outfielder Kenny Lofton and third baseman Casey Blake
