More on Mays' Manuscript

October 2, 2007

Jim Hirsch, who has been chosen to write the new biography of Willie Mays will reportedly receive $1.5 million for his efforts.

“Willie has agreed to cooperate to give me access, but the conclusions are all my own,” the author told the NY Post. “My books don’t pull punches. If I were just to write a valentine, nobody would believe it.”

According to an item in the Sept. 24 Publishers Weekly, the project was to have been an autobiography; now it’s not so sure.

Bookstandard.com reported on this story as well.

“Willie Mays is one of America’s greatest treasures who redefined the sport of baseball and became an iconic cultural figure,” said Nan Graham, vice president and editor-in-chief of Scribner. “It is a privilege to add this project to our growing list of bestselling baseball books.”
